The Cookie Debacle: Why I Don’t “Healthify” Desserts Anymore

Have you ever had a hankering for a chocolate chip cookie? Like a big tall one from, say, Crumbl?

After a trip to Utah where I DID NOT get said cookie, I came home feeling reeeealy deprived. I could not shake the craving.  So I decided to make some “best edible paleo cookie dough!” What a solution I had found! I could fix my craving AND stay on plan right??

I made the cookie dough and to my dismay, it was not good. I kept trying to convince myself that it was delicious! That it was like a real cookie! That I wasn’t cheating! 🤦‍♀️  My daughter came in and was like “Oh cookie dough! Can I have some?” After one bite she looked at me and said “mom that is not good. Why are you eating it?”

I confess that I ate the whole batch over the course of a few days.

And I stilllll was craving a chocolate chip cookie, preferably from Crumbl.

You know what I discovered?

Modified, healthified chocolate chip cookie dough does NOT hit the spot.

Also, I remembered I bake really good chocolate chip cookies. Right in my home in California. No Utah trip required.

And so I did.

And I ate a chocolate chip cookie–a regular sized one. And my craving was cured. Ta-da!

This is why I no longer “healthify” desserts.

If you are craving something, put it on your plan and then make the best version you can.

Chances are that one or two really good cookies will satisfy that craving and your brain will calm down.

Chances are also good that that real cookie will actually be fewer calories than the whole bowl of “healthy” cookie dough. (not that you need to actually count the calories, but you know what I mean.)

Learning to just eat 1-2 of the real thing will benefit you way more in the long run than trying to make it “healthy.” Make your meals balanced/healthy/amazing–protein, veggies, complex carb. And then sprinkle in a few regular desserts.

Now my town got a Crumbl a few months ago! Yay!

What’s your favorite cookie? Crumbl or otherwise–all answers are acceptable, especially if you want to tell us about the recipe!
